What is a music export office?

A music export office is an organization that helps music creators, those who support music industry and funders of the music creators with their export activities. This will include expanding into new markets and increasing their international visibility.

Music export offices are common in many countries, including Germany, France, Australia, and Canada. In Europe, there is the European Music Exporters Exchange (EMEE), which is a network of 33 national and regional music export offices.

In the UK, the British Phonographic Industry's (BPI) Music Export Growth Scheme (MEGS) is a program that provides grants to UK-based independent music companies to help them market their music overseas. Other examples include the International Showcase Fund, run by the PRS Foundation which supports artists, bands, songwriters, and producers who are invited to play at international showcasing festivals or conferences.

BLACMEX is the UK’s first Black music export office and will provide support for Black music genres. Black music genres play a significant role in the cultural and economic prosperity of the UK. Although Black music genres are a key contributor to the UK music industry, within the country access to resources, support and opportunities are limited for Black music genres outside of the popular mainstream Black music genres. BLACMEX will aim to diversify underrepresentation of lesser known Black music genres and support Talent Development Partners that represent them. Advocating the cultural and economic value of these genres adds value back to the wider UK music sector.
